New Delhi, Jan 31: Before the presentation of the Union Budget 2017, President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday addressed the joint session of the Parliament. Pranab Mukherjee referred to as government’s decision to advance Budget and merger of Railway budget with general budget historic moves. Hon. President Pranab Mukherjee said the govt. is making policies for welfare of the people of all sections of the society. The President mentioned schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana in his address to members of both the houses. Hence the govt. is working towards the empowerment of the women in our country, said the President.
“My government welcomes a constructive debate on concurrent conduct of elections to Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. Funding of elections to eradicate misuse of money power additionally needs to debated,” he said.

He additional said that many initiatives to provide healthcare to all, as well as an immunization programme that helped 55 lakh children.

“My government has taken many initiatives within the healthcare sector. Basically to make it affordable for the poor section. Mission Indradhanush is one of them that has so far helped 55 lakh children get immunised against many diseases,” he said.
He additionally hailed the nation for declaring “over 1.4 lakh villages, 450 cities, 77 districts and 3 states as open defecation free”.

Mukherjee further said the “favourable monsoon” supplemented by “farmer-oriented schemes” of the govt has resulted in increased crop yields.

Touching on the demonetization decision, the President said the resilience and forbearance demonstrated by the countrymen particularly the poor. Recently in the fight against black money and corruption, is remarkable.

Later again, referring to the issue, he said, “My Government has taken bold choices within the interest of the poor.”

To combat evils of black money, corruption, counterfeit currency and terror funding, Mukherjee also said the govt took the decision on 8 November to demonetise old 500 and 1,000 rupee currency notes.
