Telegram is the latest messaging app to get a major new feature, but unlike Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, Hike and countless others, it is not a clone of Snapchat. That’s because Telegram is introducing voice calls.

Pavel Durov founded the Telegram, a Russian entrepreneur who rose to fame as the founder of VKontakte, Russia’s Facebook.
The company says it’s spent the last few months trying to ensure that its calling features offers “the best in terms of quality, speed, and security”.
Telegram Launches Encrypted Voice Calls
Most messaging apps now have free audio and video calling . Telegram says it is offering best calling quality – claims that calls will connect faster as they’ll go over a peer-to-peer connection and use audio codecs best suited to save data while providing good quality calls. Moreover, voice and video calls and “Secret Chat” feature use Telegrams inbuilt proprietary end-to-end encryption. This has criticised by some security experts in the past. But Telegram has repeatedly defended its technology, claiming that it has never been cracked.
The company said it is using artificial intelligence to increase quality on an ongoing basis. Telegram said its AI uses various call information, such as network speed, ping times and packet loss percentage to optimize each call and learn for next time. That, it said, can improve the quality of calls as more time is spent talking via the feature.
The app offers a “low data” saving feature over voice calls on a data plan at the expense of poorer call quality.
In February 2016, Telegram reached 100 million monthly users with 350,000 new users joining per day. WhatsApp now has more than one billion users, making it the most popular chat app on the globe.
Telegram will be Europe first before coming to the rest of the world soon after.
